Get your prototype into shape

Your prototype is the first step in taking an iterative and agile approach to product development. It’s a way to prove your concept and get potential customers and investors interested.

But, before you get too far ahead of yourself, you need to bring it to life with a CAD – computer-aided design – drawing of your product in 3D. This will give you a high-quality design that can be easily amended and makes the transition to a real-life object smoother.

If you already have a design in place, fantastic. We can take it from there. If not, our friendly and experienced design team can help you out.

Once designed, you need your prototype, which we can get 3D printed for you. Then it’s time to move on to making the product through injection moulding or CNC machining.

Plastic injection moulding

Plastic injection moulding involves melting plastic pellets until they’re in a moldable state. They’re then pressure injected into a mould cavity, which fills and solidifies to create your prototype.

CNC machining

Prototyping in action

A mudguard we designed for SicoMTB Products is a great example of what can be achieved.

SicoMTB Products contacted us and asked for support in producing a mudguard that could act as a traditional mudguard while also diverting water and dirt away from the electric motor housing.

Throw in a few more complications like lack of space, and a highly complex solution was required.

To achieve this, our experienced design, engineering and machining team went back to basics by:

  1. 3D scanning the bike to precisely replicate its geometry
  2. Simulate the suspension travel when riding on rough terrain
  3. Designed a shape to fit the space – some clever design features addressed each challenge
  4. 3D printed a prototype – produced for comprehensive testing
  5. Made final design adjustments based on the results before moving the product onto the next stage
  6. CNC machined the initial prototype tooling using epoxy blocks on one of the in-house three-axis machines
  7. Worked with a vacuum forming specialist to produce the final two-piece, innovative mudguard solution, the DualGuard

Rapid injection mould tool aids manufacturing process


These protective rubber ‘boots’ were designed and manufactured in-house at Axiom to aid a customer’s manufacturing process.

The rapid aluminium injection mould tool for the parts was designed by the team and machined in-house.

The rapid injection mould tool was then used on the Negri Bossi V90 to quickly produce the rubber boots which have assisted in the customer’s quality control and resulted in financial savings for the customer.

From concept to product via plastic injection


The Axiom team were delighted to assist this British customer in the design, product development and manufacture of these colourful golf course markers.

The client approached them with an idea which the experienced design team at Axiom drew up into a working design. The tool for this product was then machined in-house into a plastic injection mould tool which was then used on the in-house Negri Bossi machine to manufacture the plastic injection parts in assorted colours. These parts were then over moulded onto the steel pins.

Working with innovative companies


Axiom PD are delighted to be working with a highly innovative company, RAD Propulsion, who are designing and manufacturing a range of next generation electric engines for the marine sector.

Axiom manufactured the plastic injection mould tool which was then used on the in-house Negri Bossi plastic injection moulding machine to produce items which need to be extremely rugged for use in the harsh marine environment.

These products are complicated to design and manufacture due to the electronic/mechanical interface which needs to withstand water, salt and harsh sunlight.

Axiom expert design team deliver mountain bike mudguard solution

It’s well known that water and electrics don’t mix which is why water, dirt and stones can cause undue problems to the electrics now commonly seen on the latest generation of mountain bikes. This problem led to the full range of skills and experience at Axiom Product Development being called upon to design and manufacture a workable solution for MTB accessories company SicoMTB Products for a particular bike model.

Traditional mudguards do not work with the changing geometry of the rear suspension, this means that they can only be mounted in one area so reducing the ability to deflect water, grit and stones! SicoMTB Products approached Axiom Product Development to take a fresh look at the problem and challenges and come up with a clever new mudguard design.

The highly experienced design, engineering and machining team at Axiom went back to basics to design a dual function mud guard which could both act as a traditional mudguard and in addition divert the water and muck specifically away from the electric motor housing. Throw in a few more complications like lack of space and a highly complex solution was required.

The in-house design team at Chichester based Axiom Product Development initially 3D scanned the bike to precisely replicate the geometry of the bike and enable them to simulate the suspension travel when riding on rough terrain. The design team then designed a shape to fit the space, with some clever design features which addressed the various problems. A 3d printed prototype was produced for thorough testing and final design adjustments before the highly skilled machining team at Axiom were brought in. They CNC machined the initial prototype tooling using epoxy blocks on one of the in-house 3 axis machines. The team then worked with a vacuum forming specialist to produce the final, 2 piece, innovative mudguard solution, the DualGuard.

This customer required a light guard protector for ceiling lights; the Axiom team understood the requirements and designed and machined this mould tool to produce the final product using our in-house state-of-the-art DMG DMU 50 3rd generation CNC machine.

The rapidly designed and manufactured mould tool enables the final moulded light guard protector to be produced with accuracy and quality.

Fast turnaround precision injection mould tool design and manufactured in-house

This is a recent example of an injection mould tool that was designed in-house by Axiom Product Development designers.
